Why it pays to be nice in your business and a year in review

Happy New year everyone! This is my first ever blog   I know, I know, should have started one ages ago but I just never got round to it. I mean...what do I write about?? I think tech can sometimes be quite a dry subject to write about.

Anyway my goal is to do one per month and it can't be that hard, can it?

So here goes...

 

As today is January 1st we naturally look back on what has happened over the past year and 2018 was pretty EPIC for me.

  • I changed my niche to a Tech VA and updated all the messaging on my site. I am a classic example of why there are "riches in the niches". Prior to changing, my business was going nowhere. I offered quite a general service and said I could help anyone with anything. To be honest, I was quite arrogant... I mean how hard can it be to be a VA?? As it turned out, quite hard! I went to loads of networking events, gained some great connections but not very many clients. My dream of quitting my job was a fantasy!

    I had started to work with a great Tech VA team in 2017 ran by the fabulous Jessica Dornieden. I got so much value being part of her team and I FINALLY found what I was looking for to offer in my business! This was it! I've worked in IT nearly all my working life so getting to know online platforms and automations comes naturally to me. 
  • After which, I started to get clients! Once I had changed my messaging, I felt I could talk more confidently about what I could offer and found a real demand in my service. Happy days!
  • I then started to earn 2x and 3x the income I was receiving in my corporate job. Now this sounds like a huge amount but I was working 16 hours a week as an IT Project Manager on less than the industry standard AND I was working more hours on my business, but is still a huge achievement!

And as a result at the end of August 2018 I was able to quit my job!

Now I did all of this by being nice and adding value. Virtually all of my clients are from word of mouth or referrals. I've had a couple (by some miracle) from Google but pretty much it is all recommendations.

This is from NO sleazy sales tactics, NOT much of a social media strategy (think scatter gun approach) and NO spamming in FB groups.

I think I probably give away too much value and people will get the secret sauce on my discovery calls so they go away and do it themselves. However my clients can't be arsed with all that which is why they work with me!

2019 is going to be even better. I'm going to re-brand, sort myself out with a new website and offer new services so watch this space!
